Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT®)
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT®), also known as tapping, is a mind-body technique that combines acupressure tapping with cognitive and emotional restructuring to address emotional distress and physical discomfort. It's based on the idea that tapping on specific meridian points while focusing on a specific issue can help clear emotional blockages and restore balance to the body's energy system.
An EFT® practitioner guides individuals through a structured tapping process, helping them identify and address specific issues while tapping on acupressure points. They also help clients reframe negative thoughts and beliefs to promote emotional healing and well-being.
What to expect from a session with an EFT® practitioner:
- Identifying the issue: The practitioner will start by discussing the specific issue or challenge you want to address with EFT®. This could be anything from anxiety and stress to a specific fear, phobia, or traumatic memory.
- Explanation of EFT®: They will explain the principles of EFT® and how it works to combine acupressure and cognitive restructuring to promote emotional healing.
- Assessing the intensity: You'll be asked to rate the intensity of your emotional distress or physical discomfort related to the issue on a scale of 0 to 10. This helps track progress throughout the session.
- The setup statement: You'll create a setup statement that acknowledges the issue while also accepting yourself. This might sound like, "Even though I have this fear of public speaking, I deeply and completely accept myself."
- Tapping on acupressure points: The practitioner will guide you to tap on a sequence of specific acupressure points on the face and body, such as the eyebrow, side of the eye, under the eye, under the nose, chin, collarbone, and under the arm.
- Repeating reminder phrases: While tapping, you'll repeat a reminder phrase that keeps you focused on the issue, such as "this fear of public speaking."
- Reframing negative thoughts: The practitioner will help you identify and reframe negative thoughts and beliefs related to the issue. This may involve exploring the root causes of the issue and developing more positive and empowering perspectives.
- Checking in with your emotions: Throughout the process, you'll be asked to check in with your emotions and rate the intensity level again. This helps to gauge progress and adjust the tapping sequence as needed.
- Continuing the process: You may go through several rounds of tapping, addressing different aspects of the issue and reframing limiting beliefs until the intensity level decreases significantly.
Additional things to keep in mind:
- Gentle and non-invasive: EFT® is a gentle and non-invasive technique that is generally safe for people of all ages.
- Active participation: EFT® requires active participation and a willingness to engage in the process.
- Self-practice: You may be encouraged to practice EFT® on your own between sessions to reinforce the work and maintain progress.
EFT® can be a powerful tool for managing emotions, reducing stress, and overcoming a wide range of challenges. It offers a practical and effective way to promote emotional healing and well-being
