Voice Dialogue

Voice Dialogue is a psychological approach that explores the different "selves" or "parts" within an individual's personality. It is based on the idea that we are not a single, unified self, but rather a collection of various subpersonalities, each with its own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

A Voice Dialogue practitioner facilitates a process of self-discovery by helping clients identify, differentiate, and dialogue with these various "selves." They guide clients to understand the roles these parts play in their lives and to develop a more conscious and balanced relationship with them.

What to expect from a session with a Voice Dialogue practitioner:

  • Initial discussion: The practitioner will begin by discussing your reasons for seeking Voice Dialogue, the issues or patterns you want to explore, and your familiarity with the concept of "selves" or "parts."
  • Identifying primary and disowned selves: The practitioner will guide you in identifying your primary selves (the ones you are most aware of and use frequently) and your disowned selves (the ones you tend to reject, suppress, or judge).
  • Creating a safe space: The practitioner will create a safe and non-judgmental space for you to explore your inner world and express different aspects of yourself.
  • Evocation and dialogue: The practitioner will use techniques to "evoke" specific selves, bringing them into awareness so you can engage in a dialogue with them. This may involve physical positioning, voice and language, and imagination and visualization.
  • Exploration and understanding: The practitioner will facilitate your exploration of each self, helping you understand its role and function in your life, origins and history, needs and motivations, and impact on your relationships and behavior.
  • Facilitating integration: The practitioner will guide you in developing a more conscious and balanced relationship with your various selves, promoting self-acceptance and inner harmony.
  • Empowerment and choice: Voice Dialogue aims to increase your awareness of your inner dynamics, giving you more choice in how you respond to different situations.
  • Duration: A Voice Dialogue session typically lasts for 1 to 1.5 hours.

Additional things to keep in mind:

  • Inner diversity: Voice Dialogue acknowledges the inherent diversity within our personality.
  • Non-judgmental stance: The practitioner will maintain a non-judgmental stance towards all your selves, recognizing that each plays a role in your psyche.
  • Self-discovery: Voice Dialogue is a process of self-discovery and exploration, encouraging you to connect with your inner landscape.
  • Finding a qualified practitioner: Look for a practitioner who has received training in Voice Dialogue and has experience facilitating this process.
  • Not a replacement for therapy: While it can be therapeutic, Voice Dialogue may not be a substitute for traditional therapy if you are dealing with serious mental health conditions.

Voice Dialogue can be a powerful tool for enhancing self-awareness, improving relationships, and fostering personal growth by exploring the rich tapestry of your inner world.
