The Dog Who Helped Her Forgive Her Father

When I met Kali for a set of Cognomovement healing sessions, her dog Brad had not eaten in two days and had only consumed small amounts of water every few hours. She was frantic and at a loss of what to do. Every loving dog owner fears this time in their dog’s life. His daily life now consisted of occasional glances toward his family, drinking water, and being gently turned from side to side to prevent bed sores. Brad was her family dog of six years; he was twelve years old now and he had mouth cancer. They had operated on him four times already and this time she chose to let him suffer no more. Euthanasia was scheduled for the next day, 2pm.
Watching a loved one die brings up many deep and buried emotions, more than she could have imagined. Grief is a beast, and no one escapes its force. Around the same time Brad’s health began to deteriorate, she had been simultaneously designing a forgiveness ceremony for her long-deceased father, a man she had refused to visit during his final days over two decades ago, despite his repeated requests at the time. Her sister had gone to see him, but she had not, and she never looked back, even right after he died, she felt completely justified. She was in her twenties then, she had been filled with anger, disgusted that he had never once reached out since divorcing her mother when she was eight. She had endured countless abuses, and she blamed him for had he been there he might have prevented them from taking place. Denying him his dying wish, had felt like perfect justice then, a way to make him hurt as deeply as he had hurt her with his absence.
When she began planning the forgiveness ceremony, she worried that true forgiveness might never come, might never feel genuine. Living authentically mattered to her, and she wanted her heart to genuinely release the hurt, not just perform a ritual. Yet as she cared for Brad in his final days, without much effort, something in her shifted in the way she felt about her father. The slow unfolding of her dog’s death peeled away everything nonessential, leaving only love. Her focus was entirely on Brad’s comfort, his peace. In the presence of death, all that is trivial dissolves, melts away and what remains is unconditional love.
She began to slowly realize that this must have been the same pure love her father had felt for her and her sister during his last hours of life, the same pure love from which she had turned away nearly two decades ago. Not only had she denied a dying man his last wish, she also denied herself the opportunity to receive this true love from him.
Kali had always been deeply spiritual. She believed in miracles and in the perfection of divine timing. She shared in our sessions her belief that every soul, even animals, chooses when to depart, that they stay until the lessons they came to fulfill are complete. For days she had wondered what Brad might still be waiting for. He did not seem to be uncomfortable, but no longer ate, no longer walked. She and her husband would place him on a towel and drag him to any part of the room where they were. They changed and cleaned him when needed, yet he hung on. Could his lingering be connected to her unfinished healing with her father? She strongly felt this to be true. The grief over Brad was a catalyst to help shift her heart towards forgiveness and love. Perhaps it sounded too mystical, but Brad’s very name seemed to hold meaning. She had not named him; he had come to her already with that name when she adopted him at age five. Only recently had she noticed that within his name were the words Dad and Bad were contained in the letters of his name. It seemed no coincidence that as she cared for her dying dog she found herself softening toward and rediscovering her love for her father. The universe has many mysteries, and she welcomed these synchronicities without question.
Through this experience, as convoluted as it was, she had come to truly forgive her father. Even more than that, she had come to love him unconditionally, despite his absence for most of her life, all thanks to the love for her dog. In the end, only the love shared remains and it burn away all unnecessary non-essential emotions. When she left my house from her last Cognomovement session I could see it in her face, she finally got to receive and understand her father’s love for her those dying days.
She reflected later that we are all here to help one another, and that the universe wastes nothing. Every event, every action, every ounce of energy is used to move us toward healing and resolution. Brad had taught her profound lessons in love, patience, friendship, and selflessness. His work, she believed, was complete. He had earned his wings. And she looked forward to the day when he, her dad and all her other loved ones long gone, would greet her once more.

I appreciate this piece. Souls teach us through many forms, not only human ones. I’m glad Kali was able to forgive herself. Resentment is a cancer, and we often don’t see what it’s taken from us until much later. Even so, forgiveness isn’t owed. Protecting your peace matters, but discernment is part of growing wise. It’s beautiful that Brad helped her grow in that wisdom.
